Solving Equations Uniquely

-2x + 5 = -8x + 29

What this equation is telling us is that the LEFT expression is equal to the RIGHT expression.

What if we added or subtracted an expression to one side to make it THE SAME expression as the other side?

-2x   +   5

= -8x   +   29

-6x   +   24

=

6x   –   24

x = 4

x = 4

Each side of the expression is essentially EQUAL to ZERO.  Therefore we can set  -6x + 24 = 0 and solve for x.
